Dr. Gouldin and Dr. Carlos are periodontists, that is, dentists who specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease, as well as the treatment planning, placement, and maintenance of dental implants. Periodontists receive extensive training, including three additional years of education beyond dental school. Our office is in downtown Falls Church, and we have had the pleasure of serving Northern Virginia since 1995.
Periodontal diseases are infections of the gums, which gradually destroy the support of your natural teeth. Dental plaque is the primary cause of gum disease in genetically susceptible individuals. Bacteria found in plaque produce toxins, or poisons, which irritate the gums. These bacteria may cause the gums to turn red, swell, and bleed easily. If this irritation is prolonged, the gums separate from the teeth, causing pockets (spaces) to form. As periodontal diseases progress, the supporting gum tissue, and bone that holds teeth in place deteriorate. If left untreated, this disease can lead to tooth loss, and in fact, periodontal disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss. Read more about preventing gum disease.
Dental implants are changing the way people live. They are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth which look, feel, and function like natural teeth. Dental implants also help preserve facial structure, preventing bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing. Learn more about dental implants.
