Growth Factors Falls Church,VA
Below are three commercially available products that Dr. Gouldin and Dr. Carlos use regularly to enhance the outcomes of the soft and hard tissue grafting procedures they perform. These biologic modifiers are applied to the root or to the graft itself, and because they are available for purchase, their use is fast and convenient, and they do not require any additional procedure to procure them from you.
Bone morphogenetic protein (rhBMP-2+ACS)
Bone morphogenic protein (BMP) is an isolated protein that induces specific cells in our body to form new cartilage and bone. In other words, BMP use leads to regeneration of vital, vascular de novo bone for dental implant placement. It has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use as an alternative to autograft (using your own bone from another region of your body) in:
- sinus bone grafting
- localized alveolar ridge augmentation for defects associated with extraction sockets
INFUSE® Bone Graft consists of recombinant human Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 (rhBMP-2) delivered on an Absorbable Collagen Sponge (ACS). During surgery, the BMP is soaked onto and binds with the collagen sponge. Once placed in the surgical site, the sponge will resorb, or disappear, over time. As the sponge dissolves, the BMP stimulates your cells to produce new bone. The BMP also goes away once it has completed its task of jump starting the normal bone healing process. Platelet Derived Growth Factor (rhPDGF-BB)
This synthetic growth factor was engineered to stimulate wound healing and bone regeneration by triggering a cascade of molecular events when implanted into the body. Studies have demonstrated that PDGF is a broad acting growth factor with cell proliferation and cell recruitment effects directed at cells associated with the periodontium (gum, bone, ligament), as well as being responsible for the stimulation and stabilization of new blood vessels. The end result is enhanced bone and periodontal regeneration and retention of the natural tooth.
Marketed as GEM 21S, it is indicated to treat periodontally related defects, including:
- intrabony defects
- furcation defects
- gingival recession defects associated with periodontal defects
GEM 21S contains at least 1,000 times more active growth factor than either PRP or PRGF preparations. This product is commercially prepared and does not require any secondary procedures for harvesting the growth factor. Please visit www.osteohealth.com for more information.
Enamel Matrix Derivative (EMD)
EMD is made up of a unique group of active proteins (amelogenins) found in early tooth development which, naturally and predictably, aid in regenerating lost tooth attachment. EMD is extracted from porcine (pig) fetal tooth material. EMD has been shown to regenerate the cementum, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone in bone and recession defects in multiple studies. EMD by itself, or in combination with a connective tissue graft, could increase the probability of achieving complete root coverage in certain recession defects. EMD is intended as an adjunct to periodontal surgery as a topical application onto exposed root surfaces to treat intrabony defects due to moderate or severe periodontitis.
It has been proven to be effective in:
- one-wall, two-wall, and three-wall intrabony defects
- class II mandibular furcation defects with minimal interproximal bone loss
- recession defects
EMD is marketed as Emdogain, and does not require any secondary harvesting procedures. Please visit www.straumann.us for more information.
