Frequently Asked Questions

WHY SHOULD I SEE A PERIODONTIST?

If your dentist has referred you, your periodontal disease has likely progressed to the point where a specialist, a periodontist, should treat you.  Periodontists receive extensive training, including three additional years of education and training after becoming a general dentist, to learn the very latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal diseases and to gain a detailed scientific background on all aspects of the diseases.

Periodontists continue to take educational courses throughout their career to stay abreast of the newest techniques in dentistry, dental implants and periodontal treatment.  Because of the in-depth training mentioned above, a periodontist has treatment and diagnostic skills to handle your disease.

Aside from treating periodontal diseases, there are other reasons to visit a periodontist.  If you are missing one or more teeth, and are considering dental implants, a periodontist can help you decide if they are appropriate for you.  In addition, a periodontist can help create a proper gum appearance to improve your smile through various cosmetic, periodontal plastic surgery procedures.

IS GUM DISEASE GENETIC?

There is a genetic component to gum disease making some people more susceptible to the bacteria.  However, without the bacteria, gum disease cannot progress.

HOW MANY APPOINTMENTS WILL MY TREATMENT TAKE AND HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

These factors vary greatly from person to person depending on the treatment needed and the severity of the disease.  Dr. Gouldin, after a thorough clinical and radiographic examination, will make treatment recommendations specifically for your situation. Our highly trained staff will then help you understand any aspects of the treatment plan that are unclear.  You will also receive a financial consultation after your treatment needs are outlined by the doctor, where our treatment coordinator will explain our fees and our payment options, and if appropriate, will schedule a time for treatment that fits your needs.

HOW WILL MY FAMILY (RESTORATIVE) DENTIST KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON WITH MY CARE?

Since he opened his practice in 1995, Dr. Gouldin has taken a great deal of pride in maintaining an open line of communication with area offices.  Every time you are seen at our practice, a report is generated and sent to your referring doctor that details the procedures that were completed as well as future recommendations of therapy.

Your referring dentist plays a vital role in your long term plan to get and stay healthy, and to achieve the smile you’ve always wanted.
