What is a periodontist?

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease. A periodontist also treatment plans, places and maintains dental implants. Periodontists receive extensive training, including three additional years of education beyond dental school, to learn the most effective techniques in diagnosing and treating periodontal disease.
