Guided tissue regeneration/bone grafting

Periodontist Falls Church, VA, Dr. Gouldin

‘When our non-surgical treatments cannot adequately reduce the pockets around periodontally involved teeth, we are fortunate to be able to turn to bone grafting, guided tissue regeneration and biologic modification, combined with osseous surgery, to improve the health and prognosis of teeth that in times past we may have given up on.” Dr. Gouldin.

These surgical procedures are aimed at "regenerating" the lost gum and bone tissue around your teeth. During these procedures, Dr. Gouldin folds back the gum tissue and removes the disease-causing bacteria from the tooth root. Then, bone grafting material is utilized to fill voids in the bone around your tooth. Often the bone grafting material is combined with tissue-stimulating proteins (bioactive gels) to encourage your body’s natural ability to regenerate bone and tissue. Additionally, guided tissue regenerative membranes may be placed over the bone graft to contain and stabilize the graft, and to block the tissue out of the defect while the bone matures. Some of these membranes are bio-absorbable; others require removal at a later date.

Regenerative therapy can dramatically improve the prognosis of periodontally involved teeth. Dr. Gouldin has published research in the field of regeneration, and he continues to stay on the cutting edge of this important technology.
