Watercolorist, Joe Phillips’ career in commercial art started in a Washington, DC Studio that employed over seventy artists. He opened a studio and freelanced for many clients in the metro area and New York.

Retirement from the commercial venue led to interest in fine art. And so he started his second career as a painter and watercolor teacher at his studio in Fairfax, Virginia.

His portraits and paintings are in many private collections.

Artist’s Statement

Like your subject, take it as a challenge and treat it freely, allowing fluency as much as possible. It is essential that one’s work captures the eye of the beholder, and holds it. By this I mean a work should not lose interest in time, or it is not well portrayed.

Impressionist Fran Rathjen’s career in fine art started in the New York area in the 1960’s showing in galleries, museums, exhibits and sidewalk shows.

After several years, Ms. Rathjen participated in shows in other parts of the country; mainly Colorado, Arizona and California.

Retirement led to further interests in the fine arts in the capital area. Ms. Rathjen started again as a painter in all mediums and sculpture. Her paintings and sculptures are in many private collections.
