Course Topics:

  • Provide an overview of the theorized etiological mechanisms implicated in the inflammatory pathway linking periodontal disease to systemic consequences.
  • Explore the role of oral healthcare providers (i.e., dentists and dental hygienists) in progressive intervention of periodontal disease and screening for inflammatory driven disease states.
  • Implement an effective patient education program regarding periodontal-systemic links.
  • Discuss which cases might benefit from referral to dental specialists and/or physicians.

Speaker: Casey Hein earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene from West Virginia University and an MBA from Loyola. She is the President of Casey Hein & Associates, a dental education company. She is also the Director of Education of the International Centre for Oral-Systemic Health, at the University of Manitoba where she is also dually appointed as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Periodontics within the Faculty of Dentistry, and the Director of Interprofessional Development, and Assistant Professor in the Office of Continued Professional Development in the Faculty of Medicine.
