Dr. Francisco T. Carlos grew up in sunny San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 2003, he achieved a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from the College of Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. He obtained his Doctorate of Medical Dentistry from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine in Farmington, Connecticut in 2007, and subsequently completed his periodontal certification and Masters degree at the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia in 2010. The doctor’s subject of study for his Master’s thesis was gingival esthetics.
Upon completing his periodontal training Dr. Carlos joined the United States Air Force as a commissioned officer, where he treated our active duty military members and taught periodontics to the Advanced Education in General Dentistry residents. Dr. Carlos completed his active duty commitment in September of 2013, and separated as a Major, with awards such as the Dental Squadron Company Grade Officer of the Year. Dr. Carlos has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology since May 11, 2012.
Dr. Carlos is certified in the Wilckodontics® (Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics™) Procedure, Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP™), the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique®, and the S.M.A.R.T.™ Minimally Invasive Bone Grafting Method. In addition, he is a Fellow in the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, and is a co-founder and co-leader of the Northern Virginia Periodontics Synergy Study Series, the Northern Virginia Periodontics Spear Study Club, and the Northern Virginia Periodontics Hygiene Study Series. Dr. Carlos was selected as a 2016 Top Dental Specialist by the Washington Consumers’ Checkbook, was nominated by his peers as a Top Periodontist in Virginia Living Magazine for 2017, 2018, and was selected as a 2019 Washingtonian Top Dentist.
In his time away from work, Dr. Carlos enjoys golf, traveling, sporting events, exercising, and coaching his daughters’ various sports teams. He is married to his wife, Melany, whom he met while at the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University. They have two beautiful daughters, Lily and Fera.

By now you may have heard that Dr. Gordon has retired from private clinical practice and has entrusted your periodontal care to our office. Drs. Gouldin, Carlos and the whole team at Northern Virginia Periodontics are so excited to meet you. Our goal is to continue the superb care provided by Dr. Gordon as he transitions into teaching at the dental school at The Ohio State University.
We invite you to browse our website to learn more about our practice and our philosophy of care. The Alexandria office at 2121 Eisenhower Ave., Ste. 502 will be closed for renovations until September 8, 2020. We will be modifying the equipment and facilities with the express purpose of ensuring an absolutely safe environment while providing you the best periodontal and dental implant experience possible.
